10 Years On

Wednesday, October 26th, 2016

In the past few days, I’ve just realised that this blog is over 10 years old. The 10th birthday was actually on September 2 as my first post will attest , but it’s taken until today for me to celebrate the 10th anniversary. I started the blog at a time when the excitement around the SMiLE shows and album release was subsiding, and there was a possibility of a quiet, honorable retirement for Brian. However, the last 10 years have brought us Lucky Old Sun, That’s Why God Made The Radio, No Pier Pressure, the 50th anniversary Beach Boys tour and Pet Sounds 50. If the release of SMiLE was an absolution from a long-time burden, the past 10 years have seen Brian both reclaim his status as a Beach Boy (and ensure that the Beach Boys studio album history will probably end with a very good album dominated by Brian rather than a dressed-up Mike Love solo), as well a vital solo artist still able to add classics to his canon. At a personal level, I’ve seen a one-off Brian show in London in 2006, the Lucky Old Sun premiere shows, four Beach Boys 50 shows, two Pet Sounds 50 shows, a Flames reunion and even one Mike Love show in my hometown under the name of the Beach Boys.

Of course, this blog hasn’t been all about the Beach Boys and Brian Wilson. While we seem to be a long way from an era where great music and chart success could be mentioned in the same breath, there is still a lot of great music being made, and some of it has been reviewed on this blog. In this respect, I would like to give a special shout-out to The Explorers Club, who have made three fantastic albums reflecting the best qualities of Brian and the Beach Boys, while still bringing through their own approach to melody and harmony.

Older Than Google

Sunday, September 27th, 2015

Google's 17th Birthday

Today, Google is publicly celebrating it’s 17 birthday. It’s now the most used internet search engine and one of the biggest companies in the world. The website linked to this blog, The Web Page For Brian Wilson is a small non-profit fansite. But we do have a bit more history than Google -almost 20 years of history. The website was started in late 1995 by Mike Wheeler, and by the end of the year, much of what you see was already there. We’ll be celebrating 20 years soon, but for now, we’ll just celebrate that we’re older than Google -and closer to drinking age in the USA!

Welcome 2015

Saturday, January 3rd, 2015

Welcome to 2015- which should be a big year for Brian Wilson with a new album and biopic expected this year. It’s also the 2oth anniversary year of the Webpage For Brian Wilson and I am hoping to revamp the site a bit this year. So this is a short post to start the year, but expect a lot more….

8 Years Strong

Thursday, September 4th, 2014

This month sees the eight anniversary of this blog – it seems like a flash, but also a lot has happened, including the 50th year reunion, a great new Beach Boys album, Brian Wilson solo works and even, for me, Mike Love visiting my town and the Flames reuniting here. So while I started the blog wondering whether there would be much to say on the Beach Boys and Brian Wilson side, there has been a lot to say. With new Brian Wilson music, his biopic and the Pet Sounds 5oth anniversary all coming up relatively soon, I expect there to be a bit to say as well.

The passing of time unfortunately also sees the passing of people, and the Beach Boys world has been saddened by the loss of David Anderle, with Brian saying on his Facebook page  “David Anderle passed away. I’m devastated beyond words. That’s just all I have to say. Love and Mercy. Your friend always, Brian.”  And these are times of much tragedy and reflection, as well as joys; but we know we will always have the music and the warmth of the sun.

The Next Masterpiece…

Thursday, July 31st, 2014

If we weren’t excited enough already about the new Brian Wilson album, have a look at this. It’s speculative of course -but it’s an interesting perspective, especially on the latest/last? Beach Boys album.

And in other news, Brian has announced a new tour date in California in October with Al Jardine.

And finally, my Brian Wilson website may be getting a makeover. Watch this space.

What Makes Brian So Special?

Wednesday, November 13th, 2013

It’s been a quite time in terms of Beach Boys and Brian news, and I don’t have any new music to review (hope to get my hands on the new Beatles BBC collection soon), so I’m going to go back to the great old message board threads, and particularly the one which asks the question “what is it that makes Brian so special?

Everyone will have their own answer, and there are a lot of thoughts in the archived thread,  but here are some thoughts from a poster named Word Cleaver

For me the essence of Brian wilson is captured in both the music and words of the extended bridge to Wouldn’t It Be Nice. He realizes that the more he talks with his love about the love they can’t yet have, the harder it will be to live with the longing. Yet he concludes, “…but let’s talk about it”. That’s Brian! Don’t be afraid to love! It’s that sweet longing that permeates his music. Plus the music to that segment leaves me spellbound: the way the vocal harmonies vibrate with the sax and the accordian just sends shivers. Then it’s followed by that great drum break, ba dum, ba dam…..almost like a great slap of awarness that leads us back to the question: wouldn’t IT be nice? Except now it’s sung not so much as in longing for IT, but celebrating IT! Whew! It dosen’t get any better than that in pop music! Sleep tight baby!

Shut Down Volume 2 Revisited

Wednesday, November 6th, 2013

No, it’s not time for the 50th year review of the Beach Boys 5th studio album yet. But it is time to remind you of our message board, one that has been through many incarnations, as the name may suggest. It’s also worth having a look at some of the great discussions in the past here.

Just as a taster of what is there, here’s a post from the thread “why don’t women like the Beach Boys?” by a poster named White Cap.

“Contrary to popular belief, I think men are much more emotional than women.Women let out surface shit like crying to their friends because everyone’s going away to school, but I think men have emotion that runs deeper than oceans. We hold them in, (we must) and we confront them in private, in our rooms, in our sleep, in our car, in our MUSIC. Music can BREAK a man in half. Tear him down to a child. Sitting on the floor, crying, listening to those beautiful melodies, wanting love, wanting to give love, share love, feel, feel, feel. Women like to dance to music, and have beautiful rhythm, but I’ve never met one where the music could kill them. Where the music was EVERYTHING. Where music had the power to strip them of walls and masks. For my male friends, music saves them. It purges them of deep desperation and anguish in this idiotic world where men can’t cry.”

Thought-provoking for sure.   Completely wrong, maybe? Discuss!

Reunion Chat

Sunday, August 25th, 2013

It’s time for another chat on the Brian Wilson page . It will be in our renowned chat room, and  will take place on September 1st  (2nd in some places) -you can find the time in your own location here. It’s a reunion for all the chatters in the old Bagism and Cabin websites in the 90s, but we’d also love to have new people chatting about Brian Wilson, the Beach Boys, the Beatles and other great music, and especially to celebrate the release of the box set. You can get registration details here.
