Al Jardine and the Endless Summer Band with David Marks at BB King’s – 20 July 2009

Friday, July 31st, 2009
We all know Brian Wilson is on the road a fair bit this year, and of course, Mike Love’s touring Beach Boys will be plying their wares during the summer. But there is another band with original Beach Boys and, in this instance, there were two people who were part of the historical band. Here is Cabinessence co-admin Susan Lang’s take on the show on the 20th.
An enjoyable show in the Big Apple! David joined in after four songs.

Al Jardine – guitar, vocals
Matt Jardine – vocals
Adam Jardine – vocals
Billy Hinsche – keyboards, vocals
Ed Carter – bass
Richie Cannata – sax, percussion
Bobby Figeuroa – drums, vocals
Jared Dalley – guitar, banjo, vocals

The show was about an hour and forty minutes. The songs were a little slow for my tastes, right from the start…i kept wanting to go up there and speed those players up! But they were faithfully performed, and it was a fun night.

Let There Be Music

Thursday, July 30th, 2009

Apologies if this seems to be temporarily becoming a Prefab Sprout blog, but a new Prefab Sprout album is a pretty rare event (2 new albums by the group since 1990!) Anyway, the lead-in track Let There Be Music is up on YouTube for your listening pleasure. You can see the lyric on the excellent Sproutnet site as well.

What Love Can Do Redux

Sunday, July 26th, 2009

Those reading this blog two years ago will remember my raving about the Brian Wilson/Bacharach colloboration What Love Can Do as part of the Target-distributed compilation New Music From An Old Friend, where American songwriters revived one of their classics alongside a new song. Well, it looks like this compilation is being rejigged, repackaged and reissued by 429 records. The Wilson/Bacharach song is now the title track and hook for the album – so good to see this great this song get additonal publicity.

The press release that I have received goes as follows

BRIAN WILSON ANCHORS NEW CD “WHAT LOVE CAN DO”

SET FOR RELEASE ON 429 RECORDS AUGUST 4

Legendary Musicians Remake Their Classic Songs & Contribute All New Track

All New Wilson Track “What Love Can Do” First Single To Radio

July 7, 2009 Santa Monica, CA:  429 Records is announcing the release of a one-of-a-kind collection of songs by some of the music world’s most creative songwriters.  Titled “WHAT LOVE CAN DO,” it’s a project put together by legendary producer Phil Ramone that brings together celebrated musicians such as Brian Wilson, Kris Kristofferson, Kenny Loggins, Burt Bacharach and many others each of whom have gone back into the studio to recreate one of their all-time hits as well as a brand new song.  It’s a unique idea where artists, under the creative genius of Phil Ramone, record a fresh take on a timeless classic while also offering an up-to-date example of their artistry.  Brian Wilson’s remake of “God Only Knows” sparkles next to his all new song and album title track “What Love Can Do” (the first single from the project going to radio) as an example.  WHAT LOVE CAN DO will be released on 429 Records on August 4.

WHAT LOVE CAN DO is more than just a nostalgic look back for the artist and the listener but it’s a heartfelt message from each artist involved that their music is more vibrant and evocative than ever.  The lineup of artists participating in the project is truly stellar representing the pop, rock, folk and jazz genres.

Pet Sounds Safari

Saturday, July 25th, 2009

Endless Summer Quarterly is presenting a “Pet Sounds Safari” to benefit the Cornelius Animal Shelter.  The event features David Marks and Dean Torrence (Jan & Dean) and will take place on 11 and 12 September.  You can see more details on the ESQ blog at http://endlesssummerquarterly.blogspot.com/ .  Sounds like a great combination of the music we love and a benefit for the animals that brighten up our lives.

Dylan Jones On Brian

Tuesday, July 21st, 2009

A few weeks ago I posted about the launch of the book collaboration between Brian and Blake Jones.  Well, here is an insider perspective of the event by another Jones; this time Dylan Jones, the editor of GQ. Looks like a very exclusive event, especially at those prices….

Going South Again

Sunday, July 19th, 2009

There’s another video using a song from  Peter Lacey and Stephen Kalinich’s excellent South Downs Ways album on YouTube. This time it is the title track, and the video is a tribute to the Indian soldiers that gave their lives during the Great War, some who have the South Downs as their final resting place.

Brian Wilson (Pic: James Minchin)

This seems to be Brian’s new message on his current tour. I’ve been scouring the net a bit to look for news of his recent European shows, and the response seems to be positive, as per this review for instance. Some interesting new songs in the show including 409, Little Deuce Coupe, Custom Machine, Shut Down, Desert Drive, Soul Searching and Your Imagination, as well as the closing part of That Lucky Old Sun, making the shows more reflective of Brian’s solo career as well reviving some old car songs. As mentioned in the Mirror review, there were also some rock and roll tributes. Overall it sounds like a bit of a party oriented retrospective of Brian’s career- maybe relaxing a bit without the pressure of a new or resurrected work.

Prefab Cover

Sunday, July 12th, 2009

You can probably tell I am pretty excited about the release of the new (or newly completed) Prefab Sprout album Let’s Change The World With Music — don’t think I’ve anticipated anything as much since the release of SMiLE. And as with anything Beach Boys, nothing is certain until that CD is in your own hands – the release of the cover design is a useful step forward so here it is. We also have a revised tracklist – the title track from last time doesn’t seem to be there. However Ride was the title used by Wendy Matthews on her album, so maybe this list is more final.

1. Let There Be Music
2. Ride
3. I Love Music
4. God Watch Over You
5. Music Is A Princess
6. Earth, The Story So Far
7. Last Of The Great Romantics
8. Falling In Love
9. Sweet Gospel Music
10. Meet The New Mozart
11. Angel Of Love
