Brian’s Hidden Beauties LXI: Girls On The Beach

Summer Love Songs

We’re completing our trilogy of Summer Love Songs tracks with a look at this classic summer ballad. And at the same time, here’s a preview of the album cover of the new compilation. Girls On The Beach occupies the same harmonic ballad territory as Surfer Girl and The Warmth Of The Sun, and while it may not have the simple yearning of the former and the deep emotion of the latter, there is still a real sense that one is being transported to a summer paradise of eternal youthful emotions. And the real surfer boy and ladies’ man, Dennis, sings the brief solo vocal section.

This was also the title song to the 1965 movie that featured the Beach Boys and contains a performance of this song. Although the song did feature on the famous Endless Summer compilation, it hasn’t been used much in Beach Boys or Brian Wilson concerts, so it does get a welcome place back in the limelight on the new compilation.

Brian’s Hidden Beauties LX: Good To My Baby

Saturday, April 25th, 2009

Continuing our Summer Love Songs look at some hidden beauties, we move onto another track that is generally unknown to the public, but has also featured in Brian Wilson’s shows. Good To My Baby is the second track on the strong Today album and features many hallmarks of that time – strong harmonies, main vocal by Mike, high parts sung by Brian.

There is also evidence of the increasingly sophisticated production that marks Today and the classic mid-60s Wrecking Crew sound. Overall, this is a strong, up-tempo and feelgood track that will certainly enhance the new compilation.

Just got this press release in my inbox

IT’S “FUN, FUN, FUN!” WITH BRIAN WILSON SET TO PERFORM AT THE

ANNUAL PETERSEN AUTOMOTIVE MUSEUM CHARITY GALA MAY 7

Museum Celebrates 15th Anniversary and Honors Chief Auto Club Executive Tom McKernan

at “California Dreaming” Themed Event

Los Angeles, Calif. (April 3, 2009) – The Petersen Automotive Museum announced today that legendary Grammy award-winning musician, Brian Wilson and his band, will perform at the Museum’s annual charity Gala on May 7. The Museum will celebrate its 15th Anniversary this year during the “California Dreaming” themed event that will honor Thomas V. McKernan, Chief Executive Officer of the Automobile Club of Southern California, with the 2009 Petersen Automotive Museum Icon Award.

Brian Wilson’s performance will include a live show featuring some of his most well known hits including “Little Deuce Coupe,” “409,” and “Fun Fun Fun.” As a founding member of the Beach Boys, Brian Wilson’s music evokes memories for classic Americana and a simpler more fun-loving time.  His numerous hits embody the California dreaming lifestyle of cruising and surfing, reflected in the theme of this year’s Gala. Wilson’s musical talent and passion for the popular Southern California culture make him the perfect addition to this year’s celebrity-filled Gala.

The Museum will honor Mr. McKernan because of his many contributions and dedication to the automotive industry throughout his forty years of service. Tom has played a key role in guiding the organization’s growth, and his commitment to promoting safer roads, vehicles and drivers appeal to the very spirit of the Petersen Museum. Today, the Auto Club insures over 2.5 million vehicles.

McKernan is also a devoted car hobbyist and avid car collector. He has a number of rare and valuable vehicles in his personal collection representative of the hot rod and muscle car eras.

“As we celebrate the 15th Anniversary of the Petersen Automotive Museum this year, it is with a sense of pride for the unique cultural traditions of California,” says Dick Messer, Executive Director of the Petersen Automotive Museum. “Through his work with the Auto Club, Tom McKernan represents the same dedication to Southern California and American values that the Petersen Museum strives to uphold.”

Legendary racing commentator, David McClelland, will serve of master of ceremonies and all proceeds raised from the evening will fund the Museum’s world class exhibits, educational programs and efforts to preserve rare and historic automobiles.

The annual Gala is the Museum’s biggest fundraiser of the year, promising an exciting night for all, including VIPs from the automotive world, entertainment industry, politics and business. Stars of movies, television and sports also attend each year. This year’s signature event will include a cocktail reception, a silent and live auction, and an elegantly catered dinner. The Museum welcomes additional charity auction donations – from auto memorabilia and artwork to cars and collectibles. Individual tickets and reserved tables for the 2009 “California Dreaming” Gala are available in advance. For additional information on the Gala and charity auction, please call the Gala Hotline at (323) 964-6366.

The Petersen Automotive Museum, founded in 1994, in one of Southern California’s most treasured cultural institutions. As part of this year’s Gala, race cars and vintage auto club cars will be on display for attendees. Serving as an educational and historic home for the conservation of numerous extraordinary vehicles, the Petersen Museum is a forum for adults and children to learn about the rare and remarkable vehicles it houses. Presently, the museum is featuring a 1932 Ford “AAA” tow truck on display for all visitors.

Brian’s Hidden Beauties LIX: Keep An Eye On Summer

Saturday, April 18th, 2009

With Summer Love Songs looming, it seemed appropriate to look at one or two of the songs on the album. Keep An Eye On Summer is an interesting selection, both for that album and this article. It was a somewhat low key track on the mixed bag Shut Down Volume 2 album that mixed classics like Warmth Of The Sun and Don’t Worry Baby  with a bit too much filler. If you read David Leaf’s album notes, you may believe this is part of the filler, but this is actually a pretty love song, with nice vocals and a real atmosphere of longing.

Brian was interested enough in the song to revisit it for his Imagination album, and has done it in concert. Now it gets a higher profile compilation entry -so this beauty may not be as hidden now.

Dreams Coming True

Thursday, April 16th, 2009

At the start of the year, I mentioned my three musical wishes and one wish that was almost too good to be true. Well, Lucky Soul have set one wish in motion, with the release of their first single which you can hear and download here - it’s great of course! And that elusive Prefab Sprout still seems like a reality – almost a SMiLE like lost album coming to reality.

Phil Spectored But He Will Be Resurrected

Tuesday, April 14th, 2009

The big music news of the day is Phil Spector’s conviction for second-degree murder. He is now in custody, although there will be the inevitable appeal. For the record, here are my thoughts on the man from a few years back. Given his extraordinary history, one wouldn’t discount some sort of comeback, but this does feel like a sad ending to the credibility of someone with talent but whose human qualities failed him.

U2 Draw Their Line

No Line On The Horizon

It is appropriate to review U2’s new album on Easter Sunday, given that the Irish rockers are one of rock’s most spiritual groups. No Line On The Horizon certainly comes across as one of the group’s most spiritual and contemplative albums in a career that spans well over twenty-five years. Yes, there are moments of rock-and-roll levity such as the first single, Get On Your Boots, which rather enhances the group’s reputation as magpies sounding a bit like many other songs. However, this isn’t typical of the album which contains many reflective tracks like Moment Of Surrender, White As Snow and the closer Cedars Of Lebanon.

The overall sense here that the group tried to make an album from their hearts and reflecting these times and the need for spiritual redemption, rather than a crowd-pleasing blockbuster. It works for me for best on Magnificent, essentially a worship song that actually hearkens most back to the 80s sound of the group. The rest is very listenable but falls somewhat short of what might be regarded as truly great.

Billboard Double

Tuesday, April 7th, 2009

Two interesting stories on Billboard- Al’s solo album seems closer to release although we’ll probably only believe it when we see a distributor and a definite date. Meanwhile, the remastered Beatles catalogue is coming out on 9 September (9-9-09, revolutionary date…) although still no sign of digital releases. Or the Let It Be DVD…

Twotles With Love

Monday, April 6th, 2009

The two surviving Beatles played together for the first time since the “Concert for George” in 2002 at the Change Begins Within concert in New York last Saturday; you can read more details here. Being a Transcendental Meditation event, it ended being a bit of RIshikesh 1968 reunion with Donovan and, of course, Mike Love.
