Brian’s Hidden Beauties LV: The Revo-lution

Wednesday, October 29th, 2008

As you can see, we are catching up on our hidden beauties after a bit of a Lucky Old Sun induced hiatus. And here is a real obscurity, and no, it is not Brian Wilson making an early political statement. Rather, it is Brian’s response to the dance crazes like the Loco-motion that were popular in the early 60s. According the liner notes for Pet Projects  (where you can find this track), this was quickly written by Brian and Gary Usher and recorded by a quickly assembled group of singers monikered Rachel And The Revolvers.

The result isn’t a major classic, but it does show Brian’s ability with the classic pop sound, and one does feel that with the right promotion, we could be dancing the Revo-lution still in 2008. Indeed, maybe it would be a good dance for these crazy times….

Drifting And Tilting

Saturday, October 25th, 2008

In less than three weeks, the Barbican Centre in London will see one of the most extraordinary concert events ever.  A performance of material from Scott Walker’s latest two albums will take place called Drifting And Tilting -the performances will be produced by Scott Walker, include his band, but Scott Walker himself will not perform. Instead, the vocals will be handled by a range of big-name current artists, including Blur and Gorillaz frontman Damon Albarn. Others include Jarvis Cocker, Dot Allison and Gavin Friday.

The featured albums are 1995’s Tilt and 2006 The Drift, two of the most avant-garde and intense albums by any artist at any time, let alone a 60s icon associated with the easy listening movement. It certainly won’t an evening of light classics, but should be incredibly intense and thought-provoking, especially when the songs include themes such as tying the fall of the twin towers with Elvis Presley’s stillborn twin! Scott Walker has hardly performed since the 60s, and unlike Brian Wilson, has not conquered his fear of performing in public. So this is the closest one will get, and with the artist line-up that is featured, sounds like a once in the lifetime opportunity for those who can get there.

Brian’s Hidden Beauties LIV: Solar System

The planet Mars

“If Mars had life on it, I might find my wife on it” -these immortal lyrics come from one of Brian’s most quirky songs, and one that might draw a genuine line between hardcore Brian Wilson fans and the more casual variety.

Solar System, from Love You, is a light years from God Only Knows or even I Get Around in style and sound. At first listen, it may seem simplistic and primitive but underneath is a strangely beatiful and deep melody, supplemented by lyrics that show Brian’s confused state of mind, veering between childlike wonder and deep alienation.

Brian’s Hidden Beauties LIII: There’s So Many

Friday, October 17th, 2008

Brian’s first self-titled solo album may have been a bit over-washed in synths and 80s production, but underneath it all are some gorgeous melodies and sentiments that still make this essential listening for anyone serious about the Brian Wilson’s music. One of the lesser-known beauties on this album is There’s So Many - a song that hearkens back to the celestial yearnings of Solar System, but also looks at the eternal and real theme of broken hearts trying to start anew.

Backed with one of Brian’s typical soaring melodies that does take you to the heavens hearkened in the song, this is a slow-burning package – at first, it may seem like just another pretty melody amongst others, but it shines through like the celestial bodies invoked in the song.

Re-release Mania

Pacific Ocean Blue, A World Of Peace Must Come and er… The Many Moods Of Murry Wilson. Yes, the list of unreleased and long-unavailable Beach Boys and related material available in 2008 will be extending even further -just read the following press  release.

On November 25, two out-of-print Beach Boys-related albums will make their U.S. digital release debuts. Capitol/Caroline World Service will release 1963 Shut Down, a hot rod-centric various artist compilation that inspired The Beach Boys Shut Down, Vol. 2 album, and Murry Wilson’s 1967 instrumental album, The Many Moods Of Murry Wilson, a long out-of-print curiosity among Beach Boys fans. Both titles will be able for download from all major digital service providers. Shut Down was issued by Capitol Records to capitalize on the burgeoning hot rod craze that led The Beach Boys to expand their repertoire beyond the beach to include car songs. It features a rare  hot rod effect laden version of The Beach Boys Shut Down. The Many Moods Of Murry Wilson, recorded by the father of Beach Boys Brian  Wilson, Carl Wilson and Dennis Wilson, features an instrumental version of The Beach Boys’ The Warmth Of The Sun and the only  available recording of Italia, an unreleased Beach Boys instrumental  written by Al Jardine.

Here’s a news release from Endless Summer Quarterly -looks like a great opportunity

On Saturday, November 1, 2008, David Beard and Endless Summer Quarterly (ESQ) will present A Celebration of Music, a fundraiser to support the Cornelius Animal Shelter, at Crave the Experience in Cornelius, NC. The event will feature musical performances by former Beach Boy David Marks with Nelson Bragg (of the Brian Wilson band). Charlotte’s own WCNC Weather Anchor Larry Sprinkle will emcee the event.

The event will be the official public unveiling of ESQ’s Dennis Wilson  Only With You tribute CD, which commemorates the life and music of Dennis Wilson, a founding member of the Beach Boys, who tragically drowned in 1983. The 22-track collection includes performances by Brian Wilson, Carnie Wilson, Carl B. Wilson, David Marks (with Al Jardine), Dean Torrence and the North Carolina-area bands DP2 and Chris English.

A portion of proceeds from the event will support the Cornelius Animal Shelter, a partnership between the Town of Cornelius and a team of local shelter volunteers, in their effort to build a new shelter/ adoption facility in North Mecklenburg County. The proposed permanent facility will be located on Meridian Street off Catawba Ave. in Cornelius, NC, at the site of the present temporary structure that serves as the shelter. The town and the volunteers are currently engaged in a capital campaign to raise the funding necessary to construct and operate the permanent facility.

Exclusive to ESQ’s site, there will be an opportunity to purchase $150 tickets to have dinner with David Marks, Nelson Bragg, Chris English and members of DP2 beginning at 6 PM. Tickets to the event are $75 for VIP-access admission and $25 for general admission. Beginning Monday, October 6 at noon, tickets will be available for purchase on- line at Endless Summer Quarterly’s website www.esquarterly.com

VIPs will be admitted at 7:30PM for a wine-and-appetizer mixer with David Marks, Nelson Bragg and the other performers. Autographs and photo opportunities will be available exclusively for VIP ticket buyers. General admission will begin at 8:30PM. Music begins with opening acts Josh Jacobson, DP2 and Chris English & The North Americans. The main event will include David Marks and Nelson Bragg, who will take the stage for an intimate performance. Crave the Experience will feature a special Beach Boys-themed drink and food menu for the event.

ESQ Editor David Beard said: “This event  A Celebration of Music promises to be a special evening of entertainment unique to the Lake Norman area. Musicians David Marks and Nelson Bragg are legends in the Beach Boy community. We are excited to include them in our celebration. That we are able to partner this event with a truly important cause, raising funds to support the construction of the new Cornelius Animal Shelter, is completely in the spirit of the evening.”

New Prefab?

Friday, October 10th, 2008

Oh, please let this be true. Mojo are reporting the possibility of a new Prefab Sprout album, and it being a matter of mere months away. As you can see from the comments on the story, there is some scepticism about whether it is really happening, or another hoax or hopeful speculation. Paddy McAloon is legendary for his unfinished works, full concept albums that have not been realised and Let’s Change The World With Music is one of those rumored concepts. But there is hope with Paddy’s idol, Brian Wilson having finished SMiLE as well as following up with a great album of new stuff.

Lennon rehearsing "Give Peace a Chance" in Montreal in 1969

Yes, John Lennon would have been 68 today -and it’s his 28 birthday that he hasn’t been around to celebrate. I reflected today that I am now older than John ever was, and it’s amazing all that he crammed into just over 40 years. Although he had many flaws, the world wouldn’t be the same without the music and ideas of Lennon. And maybe today, we should be listening to his message of peace just a little more carefully,

Hope And Stillness In The Turmoil

A World Of Peace Must Come

One can’t review the recent release of Stephen Kalinich’s A World Of Peace Must Come  on the same terms as a conventional music release – primarily because it is essentially a poetry album, and also patently homemade. And even although I can’t claim to be overqualified to review music, I feel even less qualified to discuss poetry.

The story of Kalinich is compelling -the poet who befriended and colloborated with all the Wilson brothers; the poet who spread a message of peace and harmony even in the madness and excesses of the late 60s.

Brian Wilson is present on the album -as co-producer and provider of some light musical touches- but the key here are the words of Kalinich.  And on those terms, much of this work has an incredible resonance, especially in the current turmoils all over the world. America I Know You could easily be adapted by one of the current election candidates (but I hope it isn’t). Be Still, expanded from the briefer version sung by Dennis on the Friends album brought a tear to my eye in it’s reflections on personal growth – especially the lines

“Know that your life is meant for joy

That you are meant to grow sturdy like the tall oak tree

Know that like the flower takes the sun and wind and rain

And eventually blossoms

Your life too must go through many changes

You must take in many thoughts and  much experience

Before you blossom”

As a Beach Boys-related artifact, this album deserves to see light of day, but it is much more than this – it’s a stirring evocation of the spoken word and a time capsule that was maybe meant to be held back and speak to us all in 2008.
