Sun Rising

Sunday, August 31st, 2008

In the next 48 hours, Brian Wilson’s new album will be released all over the world. That Lucky Old Sun will be available as a plain CD, CD/DVD combo , vinyl and digital download. North American users of ITunes can get bonus tracks, and purchasers at Best Buy can get a different set of bonus music. The official site is selling cool T-shirts, key rings and other goodies alongside the album, including a bonus vinyl single. So find yourself a copy somehow, get one for your friends and family, because Brian Wilson and his band have delivered the goods.

In a time of international, national and personal turmoils, Brian Wilson has shown that his greatest gift of soaring melody is still intact. Supported by his superlative band and great friend, Van Dyke Parks, a work has been created that pays homage to the Californian dream of the Beach Boys youth, but also to life itself…love, joys, family, hope, despair, loss and redemption. It’s one of the good news stories of 2008, and the world needs this album now. Surf’s up, and time to ride the wave of That Lucky Old Sun.

(my full review still to come!)

Reviewing The Sun

Saturday, August 30th, 2008

Excellent and insightful review of That Lucky Old Sun in Slant Magazine with the important comment that “Wilson’s greatest strength has always been his ability to express grief in the almost excruciating beauties of harmony.” Another good review can be found at Consequence of Sound.

Yes, there are some bad and average reviews too. But you’ll have to find them for yourself, while I’m going to believe that those poor reviews are from those addled from too much turgid modern rock or those who didn’t really listen to the music. Yes, I’m biased like that.

The News Keeps Coming

Thursday, August 28th, 2008

Quite a lot of stories about Brian Wilson on major websites, which you would expect with a new album days away. There is a major story on CNN and a short sharp interview on the Guardian website. And Apple has a big promotion for the new album. Each day, they will feature one track from the album with a video interview of Brian and Scott talking about the track. You can find it at http://www.apple.com/quicktime/guide/

Finally, good news that there will be 10 year anniversary Carl Wilson tribute concert by the Carl Wilson foundation.  Date is October 19 and venue is Los Angeles but a lot of further info is to be announced. I would be watching http://www.carlwilsonfoundation.org pretty closely for any scoops here.

Close To The Sun

Saturday, August 23rd, 2008

Quite a lot happening on the Lucky Old Sun front, and it’s now less than 10 days until the USA release, with the vinyl already out. There is a special website for the album at http://thatluckyoldsun.net/ and you can hear the entire album streaming on a number of sites, including http://theadvertiser.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/00/99999999/BRIANWILSON/80814001. Sounds great, and pretty faithful to the performed version, except for Southern California which has been transformed from a short coda into a more substantial piece with an extra verse and a lovely bridge.

Also interesting news on the bonus track side. ITunes have two exclusive tracks called Message Man and Oh Mi Amor which you can only get on purchasing the entire album there. You can preview the tracks there and they do sounds intriguing.

The Best Buy version also has exclusive tracks, namely, Good Kind Of Love featuring Carole King,  I’m Into Something Good featuring Carole King (was a hit for the Herman’s Hermits back in the 60s and written by Goffin/King) and Just LIke Me And You which was written by Brian solo. Looks like Brian’s recent productivity is bearing fruit, but may be expensive for collectors to get all of these songs, and also difficult for those of us in far-flung places like South Africa.

Another tour date has been added on November 22, 2008 at Keswick Theatre, Glenside, PA.

And finally, we will be celebrating the release of the album with a scheduled chat on this site on 31 August. Details on our chat page at http://surfermoon.com/chat.

I will be taking a few days away but will be back later next week here to welcome in the new release!

Remembering Mom

Friday, August 22nd, 2008

This last week -indeed the past few weeks – I have had a deep sadness with my mom becoming critically ill, and then passing away a week ago. She was the most wonderful example of unselfishness to everyone around her, and it will be hard to live up to the standards she set and and honor her memory. In such times, the music that I write about here becomes something of a much lesser relevance, and yet Brian and the Beach Boys music has been part of the soundtrack of love and support that I now need.

Pacific Ocean Blue Review

Thursday, August 14th, 2008

A perceptive review on Pacific Ocean Blue can be found on Ground Control magazine online. Meanwhile That Lucky Old Sun is crawling up the Amazon charts  2 1/2 weeks before release, at #45 for the CD when I last looked, with the CD/DVD at #280.

Back On Google

Monday, August 11th, 2008

The blog seems to be back in Google’s search engine after the hacking from last month. And if you search for Twotles or A World Of Peace Must Come, we’ll be in your top 10 results – good to know, right. Please let me know as soon as possible if you see any hint of dodgy pharmaceuticals or any of the other junk that the spammers love to peddle on this blog.

Sun In The West

Sunday, August 10th, 2008

The show dates seem to be coming out in dribs and drabs, but there are now a number of dates in the west USA around the release of That Lucky Old Sun that will represent the first performances of the work in America. Still a bit odd that these dates will be followed by the Hollywood Bowl shows in the city to which Lucky Old Sun pays homage to,  and yet the HB shows are only going to feature some songs from the new work.

For the record, the new dates which will feature the full Lucky Old Sun are

September 5, 2008
Paramount Theatre
Oakland, CA
September 6, 2008
Grand Theatre at Grand Sierra Resort and Casino
Reno, NV
September 7, 2008
Roseland Theatre
Portland, OR
September 9, 2008
Star of the Desert Arena
Primm, NV
September 10, 2008
Lobero Theatre
Santa Barbara, CA

Amazon Sun

Wednesday, August 6th, 2008

There are a few interesting goodies on the Lucky Old Sun webpage on Amazon; firstly a video for Forever She’ll Be My Surfer Girl, as well as a competition to win tickets to one of Brian’s September LA shows (only open to USA residents). Also a good review from MOJO can be found on the official website.
