Getting Ready For The Solos

Friday, May 30th, 2008

There have recently been two very interesting stories from The Nearest Faraway Place Yahoo group that about the upcoming Dennis and Brian albums.

On the Dennis front, there is news that Brian May and Roger Taylor from Queen have helped complete the unfinished Holy Man track, with Brian (May) telling the Daily Express,

“It was a song that Dennis had begun shortly before he died but never finished. Beautiful piano playing, wonderful spiritual feel, the whole track spoke to me like a poem and seemed to be steeped in the spirit of this mysterious man, the Beach Boy who surfed.

“I wanted to do my bit to realise it to the full. Roger loved it, too, added his
voice to the harmonies and did some nice percussion so the whole thing now has a subtle Queen overtone.”

Interesting to see the knowledge the Queen members have of Dennis, and hopefully this will make the re-release an even bigger success.

Meanwhile, Diablo Cody, the Academy Award winning screenplay writer of Juno, who has been a longtime Brian Wilson fan and contributor to message boards on the net has blogged on her MySpace page about meeting Brian Wilson for a special Lucky Old Sun performance, presumably one done for the DVD that will accompany the CD release.

Yes, folks, it’s going to be cool to be a Brian, Dennis and Beach Boys fan this season.

Bambu On The Beeb

From the Pet Sounds Mailing List, news of a radio show on Dennis and the upcoming release of his solo works

Lost Albums

Tuesday 27 May 2008 13:30-14:00 (Radio 4 FM)

*Repeated: *Saturday 31 May 2008 15:30-16:00 (Radio 4 FM)

Music journalist Pete Paphides reveals the stories and music behind some of the great albums which were never released.

The unreleased solo album by Beach Boy Denis Wilson reveals a towering musical talent to rival that of his brother Brian, writing and singing with a much more soulful style. Bambu suffered from lack of finance and coincided with other Beach Boy projects. It is only due for release this year, some 25 years after Denis’s untimely death. The programme features a rare interview with Denis’s first wife and son.

You should be able to catch this on the BBC’s Listen Again feature – go to http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/musicfeature/pip/asge0/ and a link should be available after broadcast.

Another End Of The Pacific

Thursday, May 22nd, 2008

Santiago, Chile

Brian Wilson’s ocean of dreams, the Pacific,  has many corners and one is in the Southern bit of the Americas,  where the Andes is just a few hundred kilometers from sea.  I am doing some business here in Santiago, Chile which is not very far from the ocean and right the in the foothills of the Andes with snowcaps in the autumn chill. It is a beautiful situation, and while there might not be that much Lucky Old Sun around, there is plenty to SMiLE about with the upcoming Dennis and Brian releases.

Here Comes The Sun!

Tuesday, May 20th, 2008

After some concern that That Lucky Old Sun might become another “lost” album, the great news at yesterday´s Capitol press conference is that the studio version of the work premiered in concert last year will be released on the Capitol label on September 2. This is fantastic news in terms of securing a major label release for the work, and getting it out in reasonable time after the premiere. You can see the full press release here on Brian´s official site. The tracklist looks exactly like the work was presented in concert.

Announcement Tomorrow

Brian Wilson will be making an announcement tomorrow at Capitol -obviously some speculation around what it is about…..

Pet Sounds Track-by-track VII: Sloop John B

Friday, May 16th, 2008

When I first went on the internet and connected up with Brian and Beach Boys related goodies, one of the hot debates was whether Brian really wanted this song on Pet Sounds. There were lots of reasons given on both sides of the debate, but here’s a reality - Sloop John B is on Pet Sounds, including the versions Brian has done in concert.

Having said that, it is my least favorite track on Pet Sounds, but that is also like saying mint chocolate is my least favorite type of chocolate – I would still eat it in a snap! :) The strength of the track is the powerful harmonies and the showcasing of the band’s vocal prowess -what is also interesting is that it ties in with SMiLE and That Lucky Old Sun in using traditional/historical songs as an integral part of a major original work. And while the track may be seen as an “entertainment”, there is a definite sense of alienation and not fitting in that almost foreshadows the latter part of Pet Sounds.

Pet Sounds Track-by-track VI: Let’s Go Away For A While

Thursday, May 15th, 2008

When I first bought Pet Sounds on it’s reputation (being a Beatles fan, and only knowing the hit songs from that album), the first “new song” that really struck me was this instrumental -the ending immediately struck me and made me realise that the album’s reputation was more than justified. Brian has often said that this is one of his great pieces of music, and the scale and ambition of what he wanted to put together was extremely ambitious, and fortunately, very succesful.

The power here is creating pictures in words – you may hear something different -but for me there is the bustle of every day life, the tranquility of escape and then the excitement of “getting away” in the three sections of the piece -the last section is one of the most wonderful pieces of music that I know, where there is so much going on, but it all fits together. If your first impression is that the instrumentals on Pet Sounds are filler, think again -they are core to what this album is about.

Pet Sounds Track-by-track V: I’m Waiting For The Day

Wednesday, May 14th, 2008

Brian’s hoarding of songs is not a recent thing- I’m Waiting For The Day is actually a 1964 Brian Wilson/Mike Love composition that was resurrected for Pet Sounds. Brian’s judgment was spot on in that this fits in completely, but it also shows the important role the other Beach Boys had in this album.

I’m Waiting For The Day fits into the first half of Pet Sounds unshakeable belief in the power of romantic love. There is an acknowledgement of time needed for healing and the imperfection of unreciprocated feelings, but a belief that true love and romance will triumph in the end -note also the sense of patience and caring in the singer’s tone, rather than bravado and arrogance. All this is backed up with the wonderful changes of pace, production and harmonies that make the entire album compelling.

Pet Sounds Track-by-track IV: Don’t Talk (Put Your Head On My Shoulder)

Tuesday, May 13th, 2008

One of the genius aspects of Pet Sounds is Brian’s ability to create deep emotion through music alone. And although Tony Asher’s evocative lyric creates the mood of deep emotion through physical intimacy, the song is all about things that go beyond words -hence the centerpiece being Brian’s aching vocal and the throbbing bass heartbeat. At a superficial level, we know that Brian’s basslines were hugely influential on the Beatles, but here there is even more than that -the use of music to express the highest order of romantic love.

Emotionally, this is the high of the album – even God Only Knows has an element of doubt, but on this song, there is an element of perfection that may be attainable only in a few special moments, but the song leaves no doubt that it is attainable. A wonderful coda to the impact of the song was the way that Brian was able to bring it off around forty years later when he did this song in his Pet Sounds shows.
