Brian’s Hidden Beauties XLVI: Guess I’m Dumb

Wednesday, January 30th, 2008

Glen Campbell in concert January 25, 2004 in Texas

Brian “gave away” a number of songs in the early years of the Beach Boys to other artists, but surely none is as brilliant as Guess I’m Dumb. It was apparently given to Glen Campbell as a thank you gift for filling in for Brian in the touring band in 1965. For reasons only known to pop pickers in ‘65, it didn’t chart, but Brian clearly felt he owed Glen Campbell a lot because this song is simply brilliant.

The song is often noted as a precursor to Pet Sounds, and it would certainly belong quite nicely on that album with its big production and heartfelt lyrics about the insecurities of love. Brian wasn’t noted for big horn arrangements on many songs, but the horns are a powerful feature of this song and propel it into the ranks of the sublime.

At one stage this song was rather hard to get hold of, but you can now get it on the Pet Projects compilation alongside other songs Brian “gave away.” And if you haven’t heard this song at all, why not see and hear it here on YouTube.  You could even learn to do the Guess I’m Dumb dance moves…..

Country Feedback

Monday, January 28th, 2008

Via the Pet Sounds Mailing List,  there is news of a new series that started on CMT called “Gone Country” that pits pop and rock stars against each other in a reality show to see if they can be country stars. The Beach Boys connection there is Carnie Wilson, with others including Bobby Brown, Dee Snider and Marsha Brady. I can just about see Carnie in the country idiom but Dee Snider? Might make fun watching.

Yes, Folks, It Really Seems To Be Happening…

Sunday, January 27th, 2008

The buzz around the re-release of Pacific Ocean Blue is reaching a crescendo with a number of press releases that seem to indicate that it is really happening and any official barriers to the re-release have now been surmounted. Extra tracks recorded for the un-released solo album Bambu (note different spelling to what we all expected before) are also expected to be added.

Here is a press release I was sent

A LONG OUT-OF-PRINT ‘BURIED TREASURE’RETURNS IN A DELUXE PACKAGE!

BEACH BOY DENNIS WILSON’s

PACIFIC

OCEAN
  BLUE:  LEGACY EDITION

“Everything that I am or will ever be is in the music. If you want to know me, just listen.”  – Dennis Wilson

30th anniversary 2-CD set includes (disc one) original 12-song album plus previously unreleased bonus tracks, and (disc two) additional rare tracks, including later sessions for the unfinished follow-up Bambu album Arrives in stores May 13, 2008, on Caribou/Epic/Legacy

Eternal Beach Boy Dennis Wilson’s 1977 solo album, the first solo album by any Beach Boy – out-of-print and unobtainable for more than a decade except as a pricey collectors item or bootleg – will return to circulation on the occasion of its 30th anniversary, and the 25th anniversary of its creator’s untimely death in 1983, at age 39.  The double-CD PACIFIC OCEAN BLUE: LEGACY EDITION arrives in stores May 13th on Caribou/Epic/Legacy, a division of SONY BMG MUSIC ENTERTAINMENT.  A vinyl edition of the LP will also be released at the same time, on the Sundazed label.

As of this writing, complete component details of the PACIFIC OCEAN BLUE: LEGACY EDITION package are still being finalized, as the tape vaults of the Beach Boys and Caribou Records continue to be combed for new treasure.  Initial plans call for disc one to include the original 12-song LP sequence: 1. River Song • 2. What’s Wrong • 3. Moonshine • 4. Friday Night • 5. Dreamer • 6. Thoughts of You • 7. Time • 8. You and I  • 9.

Pacific Ocean Blue • 10. Farewell My Friend • 11. Rainbows • 12. End of the Show.  In addition, disc one will contain previously unreleased bonus tracks that have never appeared on any bootleg product.

Disc two of PACIFIC OCEAN BLUE: LEGACY EDITION will be a godsend to Dennis Wilson and Beach Boys devotees around the world – especially those who have been aware of the Bambu album he had hoped to release as a follow-up, but never completed.  The tape archive is the source for over a dozen bonus tracks, all previously unreleased, from the original Pacific Ocean Blue and Bambu sessions.  Bambu has been referenced as “Bamboo” in numerous articles on Dennis and the Beach Boys, but paperwork that accompanied the sessions now reveals the artist always intended for the album to be titled Bambu.

All unreleased tracks have been mixed by Wilson’s original engineer John Hanlon (the Beach Boys; Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young; Jayhawks; R.E.M; Gillian Welch) with Gregg Jakobson (original co-producer and co-writer) and Jim Guercio (producer and owner of Caribou Records).

Liner notes for PACIFIC OCEAN BLUE: LEGACY EDITION will come from a variety of Beach Boys scholars.  David Leaf is the author of the Brian Wilson biography
Beach Boys and the California Myth (1978), and the follow-up, Beach Boys: Spirit of America (1985).  He has annotated nearly 30 Beach Boys-related reissue projects, including the Good Vibrations: Thirty Years Of the Beach Boys (1993) and The Pet Sounds Sessions (1997) box sets, which he co-produced.  Leaf is also an award-winning television producer, director and writer of more than 50 entertainment-related biographies and specials, including An-All Star Tribute To Brian Wilson (TNT, 2001), and Beautiful Dreamer: Brian Wilson and the Story of SMiLE (Showtime, 2004).  Additional essays will feature by Jon Stebbins (author of Dennis Wilson: The Real Beach Boy), Mojo magazine contributing editor Ben Edmonds, and David Beard (editor of the Beach Boys fanzine, Endless Summer Quarterly).

The set’s full-color booklet will include extensive discographic information and memorabilia.  Among these are the images taken for the original LP package by photographer and lifelong friend Dean Torrence (of Jan & Dean), thought for decades to be lost but later uncovered in the Sony Music archives.

Long considered one of the Rosetta Stones of Beach Boys iconography, Dennis Wilson’s Pacific Ocean Blue has been a collectors item virtually since the day it was released.  The LP edition, although it sold as well as any Beach Boys title at the end of the 1970s, was out-of-print in the catalog by the early ’80s, when the group’s Caribou Records deal with Epic ran out.

There’s been a lot of focus on Australia recently..here in the blog we’ve looked at Brian Wilson’s recent tour there, and this is the high point of the Australian sporting season with international cricket and tennis events. So let’s have one more look at a song with a big Australian connection but also an American one.

The American connection is one of my favorite songwriters Jimmy Webb. Webb wrote a few songs about music itself and the frustrations of being creative in what was ultimately a very mercenary industry. Parenthesis is one of the lesser known of these songs and I may well have not heard but for an Australian connection.

Raven Records is an Australian company specialising in re-releases, including a double CD compilation of Jimmy Webb songs by various artists. While the quality is sometimes variable, and there are a few odd choices (inferior Art Garfunkel version of All I Know, for instance), there are enough treasures here to make this essential listening -none more so than an Australian jazz singer’s aching version of the above-mentioned Parenthesis.

Kerrie Biddell is hardly a household name (less than 2000 hits on Google) , but her evocative voice, Webb’s cutting lyric, aching tune and a powerful orchestration make this a song that may be hiding in parentheses but deserves to heard in loud capital letters. Head to the Raven Records  site to get this compilation -this alone is worth the price of admission.

All Good Things…

Is the waiting game over? I don’t think we can take this as gospel yet, but there is certainly a lot more buzz about a Pacific Ocean Blue CD re-release with bonus tracks than ever before, including news like this.

We hope we won’t have to wait anything like as long for That Lucky Old Sun as an album and we believe recording may have started as Brian’s band return from Australia. We may have two Beach Boys related releases to really look forward to this year!

And only with a marginal connection to waiting, but here is an interesting article about the role of the most patient and loyal animals in pop music, written by Bill DeMain,  from the very brilliant Nashville duo, Swan Dive.

Brian In Oz Review

Saturday, January 19th, 2008

Unfortunately, I couldn’t stay in Australia an extra month to see the Brian shows, but here is a review from my friend Heather in New Zealand who went to see one of the Lucky Old Sun shows and the Pet Sounds show. Setlists are included :) . Thanks, Heather!

I arrived in Sydney on the 4th January ready for the Fan’s Party.  It was an exciting evening with everybody hoping that some of the band members would come along.  We were lucky that both Probyn and Nelson came along happily signing and having pictures taken with us.  Then Jeffery came in followed by Brian Wilson.  He looked nervous until he recognised somebody and then started talking and asking if we would like autographs.

I had taken my booklet from the “Smile” DVD along just in case some band members came along and Brian singed this for me and had a photo taken – well i had to do it twice actually cause the first photo didn’t turn out – but i didn’t mind .

We had a sing song of course and a guy named Stephen J. McParland came to give us a question answer session.  He has written several books about Brian and the Beach Boys as he knew them well, particularly in the early days.  This was most interesting and enlightning for us all.

Unfortunately Nicky Wonder was not at the concerts as he stayed in the U.S. with a kidney stone problem.  This left the guitar sound much thinner as Probyn was having to cover some of Nicky’s leads.  This was most apparent on the Pet Sounds instrumental.

At both the Domain shows and the first TLOS show Scott went to Nicky’s normal position to plug in his guitar for Marcella solo – there was a problem with either the guitar or the pick up in nicky’s position and Scott had a lot of problems getting everything working.   by the PS show they gave up on both the guitar and Nicky’s pick up for Marcella and Scotty used another guitar on Jeff’s pick up.  Jeff got out of his way and went and stood with Darian .  They actually still had problems with Nicky’s pick up – having to extend the intro on the Pet Sounds instrumental when Probyn went to cover for Nicky and couldn’t get the guitar to work.

All in all a great run of concerts.

(Thanks to Tony for his comments and also to Daniel for the Set List)

Wouldn’t Be Nice To Have Some Fast Food

Friday, January 18th, 2008

I think my first re-collection of any Beach Boys music was hearing songs like Fun Fun Fun as part of TV advertisment jingles when I was very little. As time has gone by, Beach Boys songs seem to be used less in ads, but a South African fast food chain has started using Wouldn’t It Be Nice in their TV ads. Even although they are hardly known for quality, it’s still nice to have the classic Pet Sounds song get a bit more recognition.

Brian’s Hidden Beauties XLV: Little Pad

Wednesday, January 16th, 2008

Before we leave the 40th anniversary of the albums of 1967, how about another peak at Smiley Smile  and a slightly odd little song halfway through that album, Little Pad. The beginning of the song might put you off, and make you think that the group themselves aren’t taking the song seriously, but hang in there and you’ll be treated to a lovely tune, some gorgeous vocals and pretty guitar strumming.

Like With Me Tonight from the same album, the song also has a tune that lodges in the brain and refuses to leave, becoming one of those things you hum to yourself to feel better. Yes, Smiley Smile is definitely theraputic!

Brian Can Be Your Valentine Date

Monday, January 14th, 2008

Brian is playing on a triple Valentine Day bill at the Orpheum Theatre in Los Angeles with Was (Not Was) and Kris Kristofferson. This will be Brian’s first show in the USA since he started performing That Lucky Old Sun but I can’t see any indication whether this will be the first peformance in the city that the Lucky Old Sun pays homage to.

Late At Night I Think About The Stats Of This World World Redux

Sunday, January 13th, 2008

It’s been a while since I’ve reported on the stats and the hits that the cabinessence.net is getting from around the world, so here are the stats for the latest complete month, December 2007. There are hits from 89 different places, and there probably aren’t too many surprises, based on the distribution of Brian Wilson fans around the world, although Australia is further up the list, maybe due to Brian’s visit. South Africa will be distorted by all my admin/edits etc. Also nice to see the increase in unique visitors to the site increasing from 146558 in 2006 to to 181260 in 2007.
