California Calling

Sunday, May 20th, 2012

It’s the place that the Beach Boys mythologized in their classic 60s song. Indeed it is the place of dreams -gold, Disneyland, Silicon Valley. Of course, it’s a real place with real people, real problems, and real people with real problems.  But there is always a special kind of glamour, romance, almost an ineffable feeling to be saying that you’re going to California.

And in less than two days, I will be leaving for California..for a conference, for some tourism, and to see Beach Boys shows. Once again, I will see a bit of Beach Boys history, as the band play for the first time at the Hollywood Bowl since their 60s heyday. And just as I come back, the band will release their first proper studio album for a long time.  From the pre-release hype, from the 90 second clips now available on ITunes, it sounds very promising.

This blog will probably be a bit slow in the next two weeks, although I do hope to post on the two shows that I see. Please follow me on Twitter (@surfermoon) and on this site’s Facebook page for any breaking news.

Cabin And Bagism Chat

Saturday, May 5th, 2012

The Beach Boys are doing it – so we can also. The renowned chat room on our website will be hosting a reunion chat in our renowned chat room. This will take place on May 20th (21st in some places) -you can find the time in your own location  here. It’s a reunion for all the chatters in the old Bagism and Cabin websites in the 90s, but we’d also love to have new people chatting about Brian Wilson, the Beach Boys, the Beatles and other great music. You can get registration details here.

Hiatus

I’ve been in Southeast Europe for conferences and travel for the past while, hence the blog silence. Expect the posts to pick up in a week as we start the run-in to Disney and SMiLE.

Ten Years On, Five Years On

Sunday, September 11th, 2011

Today is a day of remembrance for the tragedies of ten years ago. It’s not a time to discuss whether things are better or worse, but they were never going to be the same again. And like I wrote five years ago, our world needs “love and mercy” more than ever.

An event completely at the other end of the world scale of events is that this month marks the fifth anniversary of this blog. I started this blog (and excuse the sometimes garbled text, thanks to a WordPress update) with some concern that there would be little new coming from Brian and the Beach Boys, especially with the excitement of SMiLE‘s completion over for some time. As it’s happened, there has been a lot to write about – That Lucky Old Sun, Gershwin, the eventual re-release of Pacific Ocean Blue -and with the prospects in the next few months of the Beach Boy’s SMiLE Sessions, Brian’s Disney album and the 50th anniversary. Maybe that’s just what the world needs right now.

Modernising Links

Sunday, July 10th, 2011

Every few years, I review the links on the Cabin webpage. Once again, there were a few dead links and few sites moved, although the culling has been somewhat less than previous occasions. I’ve also taken the opportunity to link to my Twitter page and set up a Facebook page for the website, just to show that we are very much part of the 2010s. So what will the big fads of 2020 be?
